The Institute of Conservation (ICON) has introduced a process called the Professional Accreditation of Conservator-Restorers (PACR), which allows for the recognition of professional competence of people responsible for conserving and restoring cultural heritage artefacts. It is an interesting example of the use of validation for higher-level skills. The accreditation system is based on a set of professional standards that applicants have to meet at a high level against criteria relating to knowledge, standard of work, autonomy, coping with complexity and perception of context.
